Students at Elliott Elementary School in the DoWEA Americas Southeast District now have more options at lunch after the school’s School Advisory Committee kept the issue in front of leadership and pressed for a workable change.

The School Advisory Committee brings parents, educators and community members together to surface concerns and work with the principal on matters that affect daily school life.

Committee members repeatedly raised the desire for greater choice in the cafeteria, gathered input and stayed with the discussion until students gained additional options.

The adjustment is modest on its face. Giving young students a real choice among available items gives them a measure of ownership over their meal, encourages independence and can make the cafeteria a more orderly, positive part of the day.

The outcome also shows how an advisory committee functions when it is used as intended: an established channel for family and community input that produces a visible, student-focused result. Parents and staff identified a gap, followed the process and helped turn feedback into a practical improvement.

Elliott Elementary serves prekindergarten through grade 2 at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort (Laurel Bay). The expanded lunch choices give students a daily chance to practice making a decision and living with it—an early, everyday lesson in responsibility that fits the school’s work of building character alongside academics.

The committee’s persistence is a reminder that concerns raised through proper channels can lead to concrete changes for students.
