Elliott Elementary School aboard MCAS Beaufort (Laurel Bay) recently celebrated Digital Citizenship Spirit Week, a five-day event from Jan. 13 to Jan. 17 that focused on teaching students the importance of being informed, respectful, balanced, and safe online. The week concluded with a Family Night event that brought together students, parents, and teachers to reinforce these lessons through interactive activities.

The event, organized by the school’s educational technologist Ashley Gardner, was part of the Southeast District’s Digital Learning Plan. This plan prioritizes integrating International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards into classrooms, with a focus on digital citizenship.

Family Night Digital Citizenship

“Elliott’s Digital Citizenship Spirit Week and Family Night were a huge success,” said Gardner. “It was great to see students and their families learning together and celebrating the importance of being responsible digital citizens.”

The week featured a superhero theme, with dress-up days inspired by Common Sense Media’s Digital Citizen Characters. Students wore hats to represent using their heads to stay informed, pink or red to symbolize respect, silly socks to highlight balance, and green to remind them to trust their instincts for safety.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, the school hosted a Digital Citizenship Superhero Training Academy during Family Night. Families worked together in activities like a digital-themed escape room and obstacle course, designed to teach key digital citizenship concepts.

After completing the activities, students received superhero capes that they decorated and wore on the final day of the week, signifying their commitment to responsible digital habits.

Elliott Elementary’s Digital Citizenship Spirit Week reflects the school’s commitment to teaching students the skills they need to navigate the digital world responsibly, ensuring they are prepared for the challenges of an increasingly online environment.
