Seventh Annual Marine Corps Student Art Competition

The National Museum of the Marine Corps’ (NMMC) Seventh Annual Marine Corps Student Art Competition opens February 15th, 2025, to all U.S. students in grades K-12.

 The theme for the NMMC’s art competition is “Every Clime and Place.” Student artists are asked to create a piece of 2D art inspired by the theme. Suggestions include, but are not limited to; actions of a Marine from history (past or present), a Marine the student knows personally, Wounded Warrior Marines, Combat Veteran/Veteran Marines, or any United States Marine that the student artist believes to be the embodiment of having served in, “Every Clime and Place.”

SUBMISSION RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility 

Student artwork will be judged in five grade-based categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and special needs grades K-6 and 7-12. The competition is open to private, public, and homeschool students. 

 Deadline

Artwork entries must be submitted via digital copy. Email entries starting on February 15th, 2025 but no later than April 15th, 2025

 

Rules All entries must consist of original artwork created by the student.

2.     Entries cannot infringe on any third-party intellectual property rights, nor contain any material that is defamatory, vulgar, or otherwise inappropriate.

3.     Submit the artwork in digital form, preferably .jpg (minimum size 1.0 MB), to nmmcartcontest@gmail.com.

4.     All entries must include a completed official entry form.  Artwork with an incomplete or illegible entry form will be disqualified. 

5.     Acceptable media are limited to the following: acrylic, oil, watercolor, tempera paint, ink, charcoal, crayon, marker, graphite, colored pencil, pastel, chalk, and/or mixed media. Photographs and digitally created artwork will not be considered.

6.    Schools that are submitting student artwork for participants are limited to three entries per category. A completed official entry form is required for each participant.

7.     The digital copy will remain the property of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

 Judging of Student Artwork

1.     Judging will be based on creativity, use of media, and relevance to the theme: “Every Clime and Place.” 

2.     Nineteen winners will be selected: First, Second, and Third Place in each category, and an overall Best of Show.

3.     Museum professionals, local Virginia educators, and USMC combat artists will determine the three winners in each grade category, as well as the Best in Show, in a blind judging panel.

4.     Winners will be announced on or after May 2nd, 2025.  Participants do not need to be present to win.

Exhibition of Artwork

Reproductions (8x10, 16x20 or 24x36) of all winning artwork will be on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps soon after June 18th, 2025, and may be viewed when the museum is open to the public until June 17th, 2026.

 Prizes

Award money is provided through the generosity of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (MCHF). The First Place winner in each category will receive $300, the Second Place winner in each category will receive $200, and the Third Place winner in each category will receive $100. The Best in Show student winner will receive $500. (Federal endorsement is not implied).
