November 4: 1st Grade Donuts with Grownups
We are hosting an impromptu Family Movie Night and an opportunity to visit the Book Fair on Thursday, October 3rd. Bring a cozy blanket, a comfy pillow, or a favorite stuffed animal to enjoy a free showing of a Fall Family Classic movie from 3:45 PM to 4:15 PM. You can also check out the amazing offerings at the Book Fair from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
Donuts with Grownups is a brand new opportunity at Elliott Elementary for the 24-25 school year, and we can’t wait to kick off this delightful series with our 2nd graders on October 16th! This is a fun opportunity for students to bring a special adult in their life to school and enjoy a delicious treat together.
Keep an eye out for a special invitation from your 2nd grader, which will include all the details on how to RSVP. To make this event extra special, we kindly ask that each student brings just one grownup.

In first grade we’re learning about singular and plural nouns as well as future tense verbs. In writing we are working on writing a personal response using characters, illustrations, and events to show how characters change and grow. This idea of growth ties into our science where we are discussing terrariums and plant life cycles. Our math curriculum has us representing 2-digit numbers in different ways. Families, please work with your students on comparing numbers! Consider discussing which is less and which is more while doing other tasks together such as walking through a store or even while shopping online.

October Check Out Limits (Increased for Kinder)
Pre-K - 1 book
Kindergarten - 2 books
1st & 2nd grades - 3 books
Parents - 10 books
* Quantity of books for students will increase throughout the year. Students with overdue books may have a lower book limit until those books are returned or a replacement plan has been made.
Book Care
We have recently had several books returned with unknown food substances on the books or water damage to books from water bottles. Please continue to encourage your child to use clean hands to handle their library books and try to keep the books away from food and water. TIA!
Overdue Books
Student books are checked out for 2 weeks and can be renewed if needed. Overdue notices get emailed out to parents each week so if you receive this email, please look around your home for the materials and return them at your earliest convenience. If you believe that a book is lost, please contact me so that we can discuss our replacement process.
Volunteers Needed!
If you have time to volunteer anytime during the week, please email or stop by after school to get more information. We would love to have your help!
In October we are celebrating books about Autumn/Fall, Halloween, & Fire Safety!
What are Manipulatives?
Manipulatives are concrete materials that allow students to engage in hands-on exploration and problem-solving. They can include dice, spinners, shapes, blocks, geoboards, and even folded or cut-up paper.
Why are they important for children’s learning?
These tools help students connect mathematical ideas and symbols with physical objects, especially when learning abstract math concepts. Manipulatives enable students to solve problems by creating a physical model of their thinking, allowing them to move and change the manipulatives as they explore possible solutions. They also engage tactile learners and are widely used in classrooms today. Studies have shown that using manipulatives can reduce anxiety in students and support a deeper conceptual understanding.
How can parents/guardians use manipulatives at home with everyday objects to support math development?
You can support your child’s math development at home by using everyday objects. Some ideas include pop can tabs, rocks, sticks, buttons, popsicle sticks, Q-tips, LEGO bricks, beads, paper plates, and even socks. Encourage your child to show their thinking or strategy using these manipulatives. It’s also beneficial to let your child explore the manipulatives before providing a specific task. Additionally, you can ask your child’s teacher what they are learning and what types of manipulatives you could find or create at home.
There is still time to schedule a time to meet for Parent-Teacher Conferences which will be held on Friday, October 11th and Tuesday, October 15th.Â
Parent-Teacher Conferences provide an opportunity for you to meet one-on-one with your child’s teachers to discuss their academic progress, strengths, and areas for growth. This is a valuable time to share insights, ask questions, and collaborate on strategies to support your child’s learning journey.
Your involvement in these conferences allows us to work together to ensure that each student receives the personalized attention and support they need to succeed. By attending, you demonstrate to your child the importance of education and your commitment to their success.
We encourage all parents and guardians to take advantage of this opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with our dedicated teachers. Together, we can create a supportive and enriching educational experience for your child.
Please scan the QR code or use the button below to visit the scheduling page. Select your child's classroom teacher, choose either the 11th or the 15th on the calendar, choose an available time, fill out the required fields, and click "Book."
Don't see a time that you can make work? Reach out to your child's teacher directly to discuss what other options may be available.Â
Support and specialist teachers will be available for drop-in meetings if you wish to speak with them.Â
If you have any trouble or questions about using the site to book a time to meet with your child' teacher, please reach out to Ashley Gardner at ashley.gardner@dodea.edu for technical assistance.Â

As we are reminded by some of our favorite characters from Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the appropriate role of media in the lives of children, "sometimes with technology, balancing is hard to do, but balance is important for me and you, and you... it makes your whole self happy when you're balancing just right."
It is important to model and teach healthy media balance for our students. Consider watching this video as a family and discussing your strengths and weaknesses concerning media balance in your family. What can you do to create an even better balance in your home?
