Adventures in learning: Second Grade

Our second graders had an unforgettable adventure at the Charleston Aquarium last week! From the moment we arrived, excitement filled the air as students explored the amazing exhibits and learned all about marine life. The trip was packed with hands-on experiences, from touching stingrays to observing jellyfish up close.

The highlight for many students was the large ocean tank, where they got to see sharks, sea turtles, and schools of fish swimming gracefully. Our young marine biologists asked insightful questions and were fully engaged during our guided tour, gaining a deeper understanding of how we can protect our oceans and the creatures that call them home.

After a day of learning and fun, we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the aquarium's outdoor space before heading back to school. This field trip not only enhanced our current science lessons but also sparked curiosity and excitement about the natural world.

A big thank you to all our parent chaperones for helping make this trip a success! We can’t wait for the next adventure!

Specialist Snippets: AAPS

What is "AAPS"?

At DoDEA, we are dedicated to nurturing each child’s unique potential, helping them grow into fulfilled, productive, and contributing members of society. We believe in recognizing and cultivating the unique worth, ability, and dignity of every student. Our goal is to create a school environment that not only helps children realize their potential but also instills a lifelong desire to develop their talents and abilities.

To support our students with high potential, we offer the Advanced Academic Programs and Services (AAPS). This program provides varied and challenging learning opportunities tailored to the needs and talents of students, encouraging them to achieve their very best.

The journey to join the AAPS program begins with a referral, which can come from a parent, teacher, or even the student themselves. Additionally, we conduct a 2nd Grade CogAT screening every October to identify students who may benefit from our program. We have recently completed the screening for the 2024-2025 school year, with makeups still ongoing. This screening process is designed to highlight students’ advanced academic needs in a modern and inclusive way.

The purpose of identifying students for the AAPS program is to find those whose potential and performance are so extraordinary that they require a differentiated instructional approach. Our AAPS classes work alongside grade-level goals while also helping students develop personal goals to reach their highest potential.
